Meta has reached a key milestone in its effort to expand access to its AI tools. The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) has officially approved Meta’s updated approach for using data from users in the European Union (EU) to train its AI models.
This approval follows significant challenges Meta has faced regarding its AI training plans in Europe. Last year, the EU Commission prompted Meta to delay its AI rollout in the region due raising concerns about how user data would be used and whether users had properly consented.
In response, Meta updated its data permissions and handling processes, aligning them with guidance from European authorities. The DPC’s approval confirms that these updates meet regulatory requirements, clearing the way for Meta to incorporate EU user data into its AI models.
According to a statement from the DPC:
“The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) has concluded its assessment of the updated Meta AI permissions process, which Meta intends to implement to process European user data for the training of its large language model. The DPC has confirmed that it does not object to Meta’s updated approach.”
This decision by the Irish DPC is a significant step forward for Meta’s AI strategy in Europe, allowing the company to proceed with training its AI models using a broader dataset that includes European user information.
