xAI, Elon Musk’s AI company, is reportedly planning to expand its AI companion offerings with some… interesting new personas. While some seem helpful, others raise concerns about potential misuse and brand safety.
What’s Coming from xAI?
According to a report by 404 Media, backend code for X’s Grok site reveals references to several upcoming AI personas. These include:
- A doctor bot
- A therapist bot
- And… a conspiracist bot that “spends a lot of time on 4chan.”
The inclusion of a conspiracist bot raises eyebrows, especially given xAI’s recent history.
Past Issues with Grok
xAI faced criticism and lost potential government contracts after its Grok AI model was found to amplify Nazi propaganda. Introducing a persona explicitly linked to conspiracy theories and online platforms known for problematic content could exacerbate these issues.
Existing xAI Companions
xAI has already launched four AI companion options:
- Ani: A flirty anime character.
- Rudy (and Bad Rudy): A misbehaving panda.
- Valentine: A male version of Ani.
These existing personas are more lighthearted, making the potential addition of a conspiracist bot even more jarring.
Potential Implications
The diverse range of personas suggests xAI is aiming for broad appeal. However, the inclusion of potentially harmful personas could damage the company’s reputation and raise ethical questions about the responsible development of AI.
It remains to be seen how these AI personas will be implemented and what safeguards will be in place to prevent misuse. The choices xAI makes will be crucial in shaping public perception of its AI technology.
